Work packages
Work package 1: Tool development¶
We will develop five tools for co-creating interactive open textbooks:
A collaborative book editing tool with a ‘what-you-see-is-what-you-get’ interface.
A co-creation tool to use with groups of students.
An advanced problem creator tool.
A note taking tool for students.
Multi-language support.
All tools will be published as open software and, where possible, integrated into the Jupyter book package for optimal re-use. While the development of these tools will be a continuous process, delivering versions that can be tested and used in courses are important milestones in the project.
Work package 2: Co-creation with students¶
In this work package, we will experiment with student co-creation as a teaching method. We will test two approaches (many-author and many-branch models) in courses in various programmes and at both the BSc and MSc level, taught by members of the project team. We will assess what these approaches yield both in terms of student learning and in terms of re-useable output. Based on the outcome of the tests, we will develop instructions for teachers to include cocreation elements in their courses, which we will again test, with a larger group of teachers. The result of this work package will be twofold: a new teaching method ready to be adopted elsewhere, and an extension of the collection of interactive open textbooks.
Work package 3: Implementing FAIR principles in open education¶
The FAIR principles of open data can be applied to open education. While interactive open textbooks already meet many of the requirements, improvements are needed on the findability criterion. Therefore, we will implement a protocol for classification and labelling not only of complete books, but also on re-useable components such as illustrations, examples and exercises. We will also develop a graphical representation of each book, showing ho its parts connect to each other, and how (parts of) the book connect to other resources.
Work package 4: Teacher support¶
We will support teachers in turning their course materials into co-created open educational materials. The suppport includes training, development of training material, and practical help. Members of the project team will first test these materials themselves, then disseminate them in their programmes and faculties. Practical support will be offered by teaching assistants (TAs) trained and supervised by members of the project team.
Work package 5: Dissemination¶
Publication of tools as open software.
Integration of training modules in teacher training of TU Delft, and possibly the high school teacher education programme.
Publication of developed interactive open textbooks.
Presentations at (inter)national educational conferences.
Publications in educational journals about:
the process of developing a library of interactive open textbooks,
the adoption and use of interactive open textbooks in the classroom,
the co-creation process.
